Memory foot-print analysis

Is there a clever not too intrusive way of monitoring how much memory we use and how much memory is allocated for the various many elements in the code ?

@pdraper if I am not mistaken you had made some plots at some point, could we revive this for the coming computing proposal?

@nnrw56 do you have a tool to suggest here?
